This year’s Living Writers series kicked off in the month of September with three diverse authors.

It is a three-day journey from Hamilton, N.Y., to Teriberka, Russia, on the Barents Sea. Jessica Graybill, associate professor of geography and Russian and Eurasian studies, made the trek last July with student interns Yang Zhang ’21 and Isobel Hooker ’21, checking in for a week’s stay at one of the village’s first Airbnbs.

This summer, the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown, N.Y. staged the world premiere of Blue, an opera exploring police brutality in black communities. A pre-show discussion with 51�Թ��� professors on topics such as institutionalized racism preceded each of the production’s seven performances, and several of the shows included post-show talkbacks as well.

As 51�Թ���’s first-year students moved into residence halls, the Institution also welcomed 58 new faculty members to campus.

The Third-Century Plan, unveiled last May, underscores the University’s intention to recruit scholars of the first order for new tenure-track teaching positions. In keeping with its ambitious plan, 51�Թ��� is announcing a series of enhancements to faculty hiring packages.

Since its inception in 1980 by Professor Emeritus Frederick Busch, Living Writers has welcomed an array of writers, from up-and-coming novelists to Pulitzer Prize winners.

Psychology major Keara Greene ’20, from Halifax, Mass. describes her summer research combining environmental studies and art.

Political science and peace and conflict studies double major Chris Burke ’21, from Wellesley, Mass. describes his research in Prague as a Stone Fellow with the Center for Freedom and Civilization. 

In an effort to bring multilingual worlds home to 51�Թ��� students, Professors Matthew Miller and Mahadevi Ramakrishnan from the German and French departments led 16 students on a one-week excursion to the TriRhena region in May. 

Two 51�Թ��� students accompanied Mahadevi Ramakrishnan, senior lecturer in French, to Santa Marta last month to present at the 44th Caribbean Studies Conference, hosted by the Caribbean Studies Association.
