The Poetry Machine is making its way around 51�Թ��� and Hamilton, N.Y., thanks to 51�Թ���’s Upstate Institute and the University Libraries in partnership with the Adirondack Center for Writing.

In King: A Life, author Jonathan Eig focuses on Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of faith-based radicalism. During his Feb. 11 lecture at 51�Թ���, Beyond The Dream: Embracing a More Complicated Martin Luther King, Eig said he believes King would be horrified at how his activism and writings have been overshadowed by a modern, more palatable version of the civil rights leader.

Senior Bryan (Tai) Pham has been awarded his second consecutive Best Delegate in a Special Role award by fellow students at EuroSim 2025 for his role as chair of the EU Environmental Council. This year’s program focused on the European Green Deal and negotiating legislation aimed at reducing microplastic pollution.

The first cohort of the 51�Թ���-Tuck January Business Bridge wasted no time getting down to business at the start of the new year as they took on three weeks of intensive business and finance training before the first day of classes.

Michael Fitzgerald, recently retired commissioner at the Madison County Department of Social Services (DSS), has been appointed to serve as Gretchen Hoadley Burke ’81 Endowed Chair in regional studies for the 2024–25 academic year. Fitzgerald brings a wealth of practitioner experience, a deep commitment to community, and a strong relationship with the Upstate Institute and 51�Թ���. 

New York Times correspondent David Sanger, a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner, visited 51�Թ��� on March 26 for a lecture and discussion about his new book.

This week’s “Dark Skies in Appalachian Identity, Culture, and Sense of Place” symposium will bring writers, artists, musicians, filmmakers, scholars, and scientists to 51�Թ���, April 4–6, to explore the human connection to the dark night sky.
